How Often to Clean Pool Filter: A Seasonal Maintenance Guide
Deciding how often to clean pool filter systems requires more than just checking a pressure gauge. While a pressure rise of 8-10 PSI is the golden rule for backwashing, your filter cleaning frequency shifts dramatically depending on the time of year. A pool filter in the middle of a sweltering, high-traffic July summer requires vastly different maintenance than one winding down in late October. Understanding this seasonal timeline will prevent unexpected algae blooms and prolong the life of your equipment.
Spring Opening: The Heavy Lifting
When you pull the cover off your pool in the spring, the water is often cloudy, green, or filled with fine winter debris. This is the hardest your filter will work all year.
- First 48 Hours: You may need to backwash or clean your filter 2 to 3 times in the first two days of opening. The system is filtering out massive amounts of dead algae and pollen.
- The Chemical Clean: Spring is the best time to perform a 24-hour chemical deep clean on your sand, cartridge, or D.E. grids. This removes any hardened calcium or winterized grime before the heavy swimming season begins.
Summer Peak: The High-Traffic Zone
From June through August, the sun is blazing, the water is warm, and bather load is at its maximum. Sunscreen, body oils, and cosmetics are introduced into the water daily.
- Cartridge Filters: Check the pressure weekly. You will likely need to hose them down every 3 to 4 weeks during peak summer.
- Sand/D.E. Filters: Expect to backwash every 4 to 6 weeks. However, if you host a large pool party, check the pressure the very next morning—you may need an immediate backwash.
Fall Transition: The Leaf Invasion
As temperatures drop and swimming stops, a new threat emerges: falling leaves and heavy storms.
- While skimming is your primary defense, fine organic matter and phosphate-rich dirt will wash into the pool. This organic load can spike filter pressure quickly.
- Keep a close eye on the skimmer baskets. If a basket clogs with leaves, the pump starves for water, and filtration halts completely.
Winterizing: The Final Shutdown
If you close your pool for the winter, you must prepare the filter to survive freezing temperatures.
- Perform a final, thorough backwash or cartridge cleaning. Never store a dirty filter for the winter; the dirt will harden like concrete over 6 months.
- Drain all water from the filter tank by removing the bottom drain plug. Store cartridges indoors to protect the plastic banding from freezing and cracking.
